When it comes to serious waterfowl hunting on Lake Erie, Captain Kenny Lewis knows exactly where the birds are moving. This isn't your typical marsh hunt – we're talking about open-water duck hunting from his custom 38 SACPAS boat that can handle whatever Lake Erie throws at us. You'll be targeting some of the best diving ducks in the Great Lakes region, from hefty Canvasback to lightning-fast Goldeneye. With room for 4 hunters at $1,400 total, this hunt delivers premium waterfowling without breaking the bank. Kenny provides breakfast to fuel you up before we head out, but you'll need to bring your own shotgun, shells, and make sure your duck stamp and hunting license are current. Fair warning – deposits are non-refundable, so come ready to hunt regardless of weather conditions.
This Lake Erie duck hunt runs from Kenny's specialized 38 SACPAS boat, which is built specifically for Great Lakes waterfowling. We're not sitting in a blind waiting for birds to show up – we're mobile, covering water and positioning ourselves where the ducks want to be. The hunt typically starts before dawn with breakfast, then we motor out to prime feeding areas where diving ducks raft up by the thousands during peak migration. Kenny reads the weather, wind, and bird movement patterns like a book, adjusting our setup throughout the day to stay on top of the action. The open-water hunting style means you'll need to be comfortable shooting from a boat platform, and conditions can change fast on the big lake. Pack layers and waterproof gear because Lake Erie doesn't mess around when it comes to weather. Kenny's been running these hunts for years and knows exactly how to position the boat for safe, effective shooting opportunities.
Lake Erie duck hunting is all about understanding how diving ducks use the open water versus near-shore structure. We're primarily hunting over deeper water where these ducks feed on zebra mussels, small fish, and aquatic vegetation that thrives in the lake's nutrient-rich environment. Kenny uses a combination of motion decoys and traditional floating spreads to draw birds within range. The key technique here is reading the wind and current to predict flight patterns – diving ducks approach differently than puddle ducks, often coming in low and fast over the waves. You'll want to bring steel shot in sizes 2-4, with 3-inch shells being the sweet spot for the ranges we're typically shooting. The boat setup allows for 360-degree shooting opportunities, but safety protocols are strict with four hunters aboard. Kenny will brief everyone on shooting zones and communication signals before we start hunting. Weather plays a huge role in success – storm fronts and north winds push birds south along the lake, creating spectacular shooting opportunities for hunters who aren't afraid of rough conditions.
Redhead ducks are one of the premier targets on this Lake Erie hunt, and for good reason. These chunky diving ducks prefer the deeper waters of the Great Lakes and feed heavily on zebra mussels, which gives them excellent table quality. Redheads typically show up in large rafts during late October through December, and they're known for their distinctive rusty-red head on drakes and subtle brown coloring on hens. They fly fast and direct, often providing challenging crossing shots that separate experienced hunters from newcomers. What makes hunting Redheads exciting is their unpredictable approach patterns – they might circle the decoys multiple times or come screaming in without any warning.
Canvasback represent the king of diving ducks, and Lake Erie holds some of the best populations in the flyway. These sleek, fast-flying ducks are larger than most divers and provide excellent eating thanks to their diet of aquatic vegetation and small mollusks. Canvasback have a distinctive wedge-shaped profile in flight and are known for their high-speed approaches to decoy spreads. The drakes show beautiful white backs and rusty-red heads, while hens display more subdued brown tones. They're most active during November and early December when weather conditions push them out of northern breeding areas. Canvasback often travel in small groups rather than massive flocks, making each encounter feel special.
Goldeneye and Bufflehead add fast-paced action to the hunt with their erratic flight patterns and lightning-quick reflexes. Goldeneye are medium-sized divers with distinctive white patches on their faces, and they're known for making a whistling sound with their wings during flight. They prefer rocky areas and drop-offs where they can dive for small fish and aquatic insects. Bufflehead are the smallest ducks we target, but they make up for size with speed and agility. These little divers are incredibly fast and often surprise hunters by appearing suddenly in the decoy spread. Both species provide excellent wing shooting practice and are surprisingly good table fare despite their fish-heavy diet.
Common and Red-Breasted Merganser round out the target species list, offering hunters a chance at some of the most challenging shots on the Great Lakes. These fish-eating ducks are built for speed and underwater pursuit, with serrated bills designed for catching slippery prey. Red-Breasted Merganser show distinctive crested heads and are known for their low, fast flight over the water's surface. Common Merganser are larger and more wary, often requiring long shots at birds that seem to appear and disappear in seconds. While mergansers aren't typically considered prime table fare due to their fish diet, they provide some of the most exciting wing shooting opportunities you'll find on Lake Erie. Their unpredictable flight patterns and tendency to fly in tight formations create memorable hunting moments that experienced waterfowlers crave.
Captain Kenny Lewis has built his reputation on consistently putting hunters on quality birds in some of the most challenging conditions the Great Lakes can offer. This Lake Erie duck hunt combines the excitement of open-water hunting with the comfort and safety of a purpose-built waterfowling boat. At
